Moku

Rival chiefs fight for Hawaiʻi Island: hold the districts, cross the mountain, and send your canoes along the coast.

How to play

Take territories, hold whole districts (moku) for bonus troops, and be the last chief standing.

Setting up

Each chief starts with 30 troops (2 players), 25 (3 players) or 20 (4 players). In a 2-player game, whoever goes second gets 4 extra to make up for moving second.

Each turn

  1. Reinforce. Get troops equal to your territories ÷ 3 (at least 3), plus +2 for each coastal district you hold whole and +3 for the Mauna. Trade card sets for more.
  2. Attack. Pick your territory, then a connected enemy. You roll up to 3 dice, they roll up to 2; highest dice are compared and ties go to the defender.
  3. Fortify. Once, move troops between two of your territories connected through your land. This ends your turn.

The mountain

The mountains are impassable except at four entrances: Kailua and Waiākea into Humuʻula, Waimea onto Mauna Kea, and Kapāpala up to Mauna Loa.

Canoes

Four routes link pairs of harbors. Pick your harbor and launch troops onto the route. On your next turn they must land at the far harbor (attacking it if an enemy holds it) or return home. You can only sail from harbors you own.

Cards

Take a territory on your turn to earn a card. Trade three alike, one of each, or any two with a wild for troops; each set traded is worth more than the last. With 5 or more cards you must trade.
